EDX Markets Closes $76M Series C Led by SBI Holdings
SBI Holdings, a Tokyo-listed financial conglomerate, led a $76 million Series C funding round for EDX Markets, a U.S. institutional crypto trading venue built on a clearinghouse model. The capital will fund expansion of EDX's trading, clearing, and settlement capabilities alongside product development and global operations.
SBI Holdings, a Tokyo-listed financial group that operates SBI Shinsei Bank and SBI Securities, led a $76 million Series C funding round for EDX Markets, marking a significant institutional presence for the U.S. crypto trading venue.
EDX Markets operates a clearinghouse-model exchange designed for institutional trading. Unlike conventional spot exchanges, EDX combines an institution-only venue with a central clearinghouse that settles trades daily and limits bilateral counterparty exposure between members. The company has filed an application with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish EDX Trust, a proposed national trust bank for regulated custody, clearing, and settlement. EDX also launched EDX FlowConnect, a crypto-as-a-service product that enables firms to build their own digital asset trading offerings.
SBI becomes a strategic investor in EDX as the Japanese conglomerate expands its domestic digital asset ecosystem. SBI Group recently launched JPYSC, described as Japan's first trust bank-backed yen stablecoin, and is handling U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoins including RLUSD and USDC domestically. According to SBI Holdings chairman and president Yoshitaka Kitao, the investment reflects the group's belief that "trusted market infrastructure will serve as a critical foundation for institutional adoption."
EDX Markets CEO Tony Acuña-Rohter stated the capital will strengthen "our ability to deliver the capabilities and market access that financial institutions need to engage with digital assets confidently and at scale." The funds will support expansion of trading, clearing, and settlement capabilities alongside product development and global operations.
The Series C reflects ongoing institutional capital deployment into regulated crypto infrastructure in the United States. SBI's involvement ties the investment to a broader cross-border digital asset infrastructure strategy that extends the group's previous focus in Asian markets into core U.S. venues.
SBI Holdings becomes a strategic investor in EDX Markets, deepening Japanese institutional finance's presence in U.S. regulated digital asset infrastructure.
Watch whether EDX's OCC application advances and whether adoption of its clearinghouse model attracts additional institutional capital or competes with existing spot and derivatives venues. The deal would be invalidated if SBI's investment is used materially differently from stated expansion purposes or if regulatory approval for EDX Trust is substantially delayed or denied.
And that's the way it is.
