MUFG to test real-time blockchain settlement for Japanese government bond trades

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Japan's largest bank, is preparing a proof-of-concept to settle Japanese government bond transactions on the Canton blockchain network. The test targets real-time 24/7 settlement versus the traditional 1-3 day cycle. MUFG also joined Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Mizuho Financial Group to explore a jointly issued stablecoin by March 2027.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Japan's largest bank, is preparing a proof-of-concept to settle Japanese government bond transactions on the Canton blockchain network, according to CoinDesk. The test targets real-time 24/7 settlement, compressing the traditional 1-3 day settlement cycle.

Japanese government bonds are widely used as collateral for repo transactions by market participants in Japan and overseas, and the efficiency gain from onchain settlement centers on capital velocity and operational cost. MUFG stated that repo transactions, which rely on the fast turnover of collateral, stand to benefit from around-the-clock settlement that eliminates weekend and holiday breaks.

The bank expects to improve the operational and capital efficiency of repo transactions through real-time settlement on blockchain, per CoinDesk. JPMorgan's Kinexys network, which offers blockchain-based intraday U.S. Treasury bond repos, went live in 2020, establishing proof that large financial institutions can deploy this infrastructure at scale. MUFG noted that financial institutions in Europe and the U.S. have expanded proof-of-concept projects to achieve this exact goal of faster government bond settlement.

MUFG stated: "Given their high credit worthiness and liquidity, JGBs are widely used as collateral for repo transactions by market participants in Japan and overseas, and momentum for bringing them onchain is growing." The statement frames the move as response to market demand rather than regulatory requirement.

Separately, MUFG teamed up with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Mizuho Financial Group to explore listing a jointly issued stablecoin by March 2027, per CoinDesk. The two initiatives, though distinct, signal Japanese banking institutions moving in parallel to test both blockchain infrastructure for traditional assets and native digital currencies.

The brief does not specify a completion timeline for the Canton proof-of-concept, nor does it disclose the technical mechanics of how Canton will handle JGB settlement, regulatory approvals required in Japan, or which other institutions may join the test.

The key fact

MUFG is building a proof-of-concept for onchain JGB settlement via Canton, aiming to compress settlement from 1-3 days to real-time.

The Bottom Line

Watch for announcements of participating institutions and a timeline for proof-of-concept completion. If MUFG moves from test to production, it signals validation of Canton as settlement infrastructure for major government bond markets. A delay or withdrawal would indicate either technical obstacles or regulatory friction in Japan.
