SEC Postpones Regulation Crypto Proposal Meeting Without New Date
The SEC cancelled its Friday meeting scheduled to propose Regulation Crypto, citing an unforeseen scheduling conflict. The agency has not announced a new date for the proposal, leaving the crypto industry's regulatory timeline unclear.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission cancelled the Friday meeting at which it planned to propose Regulation Crypto, according to CoinDesk's reporting. The agency cited an unforeseen scheduling issue and has moved the meeting to a later date without specifying when.
Regulation Crypto is expected to create a limited framework allowing issuers to offer certain investment contracts without triggering full SEC registration requirements. According to CoinDesk, the framework would also allow projects to later transition out of SEC management and regulatory oversight. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has described Reg Crypto as a tailored offering regime and a central point of his digital assets regulatory plan.
The postponement extends the timeline for the SEC's primary rulemaking path on crypto securities. Until Reg Crypto advances through public notice and comment, the SEC has relied on a series of policy statements to clarify its position on digital assets. The agency was also expected to propose an innovation exemption for tokenizing securities, per CoinDesk's reporting, and that is also expected to face delay.
Without SEC action on Reg Crypto, the crypto industry's other regulatory hope rests on the Senate's Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which requires 60 votes to pass. It remains unclear, according to the reporting, whether negotiations among lawmakers and the White House will find enough common ground to get the Clarity Act over that threshold.
The delay leaves tokenization and crypto securities offerings in a regulatory gray zone. The SEC's postponement creates indefinite uncertainty about the timeline for formal rulemaking, with no announced reschedule date.
The SEC cancelled the meeting at which it intended to propose Regulation Crypto, its first major rulemaking effort to create a limited framework for crypto securities offerings, and has not rescheduled it.
Watch for any announcement of a new Reg Crypto meeting date and for progress on the Senate's Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. If neither path advances before the end of the fiscal or calendar year, tokenization and crypto securities offerings will remain in regulatory limbo heading into 2027.
And that's the way it is.
