Wells Fargo launches tokenized deposits for 24/7 corporate settlement
Wells Fargo will offer tokenized deposits on its proprietary blockchain starting this fall, beginning with round-the-clock USD-GBP transactions for select corporate clients. Tokenized deposits are conventional bank balances on a blockchain that carry standard deposit insurance and regulatory protections. The bank joins JPMorgan and Citi in offering institutional tokenized settlement rails.
Wells Fargo will offer tokenized deposits for select corporate and commercial clients later this year, starting with enabling round-the-clock U.S. dollar-to-British pound transactions on its proprietary blockchain, according to CoinDesk reporting. Payments will run on the bank's proprietary blockchain and be routed automatically through its existing client interface.
Tokenized deposits are conventional bank balances held on a blockchain. They remain commercial bank money and carry the same regulatory protections and deposit-insurance eligibility as existing deposit products. The initial rollout will expand to more clients, countries, and currencies throughout 2027.
Round-the-clock settlement, programmable payments, and parity with existing deposit protections are listed as future enhancements, with the system allowing clients to move, program, and settle funds 24/7/365 when fully deployed. Future features will include conditional payments using smart contracts. The platform could support in-house custodial wallets and connections to other blockchains. Wells Fargo can also integrate with a shared tokenized-deposit network being developed by The Clearing House.
Wells Fargo joins JPMorgan and Citi, which already operate institutional tokenized-deposit services. The rollout follows Wells Fargo's March trademark application for WFUSD, which could be associated with a deposit token or stablecoin. The bank has been developing blockchain payment rails since at least 2019, when it announced Wells Fargo Digital Cash for internal cross-border transfers. Wells Fargo later started settling foreign-exchange transactions with HSBC through a shared blockchain.
The move reflects a broader shift among major banks toward tokenized infrastructure as an answer to stablecoins. By offering 24/7 settlement and programmable payments on tokenized deposits, banks are positioning themselves to retain corporate treasury and payments business that might otherwise migrate to decentralized or stablecoin-based alternatives.

Monitor the fall launch and initial adoption rates among Wells Fargo's corporate client base. The announcement would face credibility challenges if the bank delays the USD-GBP pair rollout or if interoperability with The Clearing House's shared network does not materialize by late 2027.
And that's the way it is.
