Crowd sentiment
One number for the market's mood, from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed). Today: 29, fear.
Fear & Greed Index, via alternative.me daily data
Reading the trend matters more than any single day: a mood that has been dark for weeks tells you more than one nervous afternoon. The zones on the chart below are the same ones the gauge uses, so you can see exactly how long the crowd has been sitting in fear or greed.
90 days of crowd mood
Sentiment 101
The index blends measurable proxies for emotion: price volatility, trading volume, social media chatter, and Bitcoin dominance. When those run hot the score climbs toward greed; when they freeze up it sinks toward fear.
Historically, extreme fear has often appeared near local bottoms and extreme greed near local tops, because crowds overreact in both directions. That is a tendency, not a law: fear can stay extreme for months in a real bear market.
The gauge says nothing about what anything is worth. It measures how people feel about prices, which is exactly why it is useful and exactly why it should never be a buy or sell signal on its own.
Free public market data, computed with standard formulas at build time: sentiment from alternative.me, prices from CoinGecko, stablecoin float from DefiLlama, Bitcoin network data from mempool.space. Market data, not news, not advice. Not financial advice. Crypto Cronkite reports events and explains what they may mean. It never tells you to buy or sell anything. Do your own research.
