Tether posts $1.5 billion operating profit in Q2 as reserve buffer falls by half
Tether reported $1.5 billion in net operating profit for Q2 2026, down 69% from $4.9 billion year-ago, while its reserve buffer fell to $4.11 billion from $8.23 billion the prior quarter. The company added 14 metric tons of gold and roughly 1,796 bitcoin to its holdings despite declines in their values.
Tether reported $1.5 billion in net operating profit for Q2 2026, down 69% from $4.9 billion in the year-ago quarter, per CoinDesk. The stablecoin issuer's reserve buffer, the cushion between assets and liabilities, fell to $4.11 billion as of June 30, 2026, compared with $8.23 billion three months earlier, according to CoinDesk.
Tether held $187.75 billion in assets against $183.64 billion in liabilities as of June 30, 2026, per a BDO attestation cited by CoinDesk. USDT issuance increased by about $446 million to $184.6 billion during Q2 2026, according to CoinDesk's reporting.
The company increased physical gold holdings by 14 metric tons to roughly 146.2 metric tons during Q2 2026, up from 132.2 metric tons at the start of the quarter, per CoinDesk. Despite the increase in physical units, the value of those holdings fell to $18.84 billion from $19.84 billion during the quarter because the gold price dropped about 15% to just over $4,000 per ounce, according to CoinDesk.
Tether lifted bitcoin holdings by roughly 1,796 coins to 98,933 BTC during Q2 2026, per CoinDesk. The value of bitcoin holdings fell to $5.80 billion from $6.62 billion during the quarter, according to CoinDesk. Bitcoin's price used in the reports declined to $58,600 from $68,200 during Q2 2026, per CoinDesk.
Q2 2026 profit was driven by returns from U.S. Treasury and repurchase agreement holdings, according to CoinDesk.
The profit decline of 69% year-over-year comes despite stablecoin issuance growth, raising questions about operational headwinds or margin compression. Tether's reserve buffer halved in a single quarter, from Q1 to Q2 2026, suggesting accelerated capital deployment or significant losses to asset holdings. Crypto asset holdings (gold and bitcoin) declined in value during the quarter despite Tether adding physical units, reflecting substantial downward price pressure on the company's reserves.
Tether's operating profit fell 69% year-over-year while its reserve buffer halved in a single quarter, even as USDT issuance grew by $446 million to $184.6 billion.
Watch for Q3 reserve levels and whether the buffer stabilizes or continues eroding. The narrative would shift if operating profit rebounds despite crypto asset prices staying under pressure, or if the reserve buffer drops below $4 billion relative to total liabilities.
And that's the way it is.
