Hyperliquid in advanced talks with Kraken parent on US perpetuals entry through Bitnomial

Hyperliquid Labs is in advanced talks with Payward, Kraken's parent, to bring perpetual futures to US traders through Bitnomial, a CFTC-regulated futures exchange. Both companies declined to comment, and regulatory approval remains pending.

Hyperliquid Labs is in advanced talks with Payward, the parent company of Kraken, to bring perpetual futures to US traders through Bitnomial, a CFTC-regulated futures exchange, according to reporting by The Defiant and The Block. A deal would allow US-based traders to access perpetual futures tied to tokens built on Hyperliquid's blockchain, though any agreement would require regulatory sign-off.

Payward completed its acquisition of Bitnomial in April 2026. Bitnomial was designated as a contract market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in 2020 and has assembled licenses covering an exchange, clearinghouse and brokerage. In May 2026, Kraken announced plans for CFTC-regulated perpetual futures to trade through Kraken Pro, with those contracts listed on Bitnomial and offered through NinjaTrader Clearing, a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant.

Hyperliquid's public interface currently bars US residents and entities from using it, according to the platform's terms. The platform handles more than $4 billion in daily trading volume. Representatives of Payward and Hyperliquid Labs declined to comment to Bloomberg on the reported talks.

The Afternoon Brief 8:19 PM UTC

Cronos validators completed their chain reversal on Tuesday, rolling back 10,961 blocks to erase the Tectonic lending protocol exploitation that put $75 million at risk. The 10-hour halt and rewind, executed Monday evening and finishing early Tuesday, erased 1 hour 54 minutes of settled transactions. As the desk reported this morning, the attack centered on a price-manipulation spike in the TONIC governance token, which the attacker used as collateral to borrow assets from Tectonic. The rollback recovered most of the extracted funds but left approximately $6.3 million already moved to Ethereum unreachable, per The Defiant's reporting. Cronos has not yet published accounting for liquidations, copycat bot gains, or residual bad debt inside Tectonic, nor has it announced a user compensation framework.

The rollback marks the first time a major blockchain deployed validator-driven chain state reversal to contain a DeFi failure at the protocol level. The precedent raises a structural question: whether this intervention becomes a template for other chains facing large-scale exploits or remains a singular emergency measure. Tectonic's core vulnerability, the absence of safeguards against rapid price moves on thin governance tokens used as collateral, mirrors patterns documented in earlier DeFi attacks like Mango Markets, suggesting the design risk may recur across protocols that do not explicitly defend against oracle manipulation on low-liquidity assets.

In parallel, Japan's macroeconomic backdrop shifted sharply on Tuesday. The 10-year government bond yield reached 3%, a 30-year high, marking a 2,900 percent increase since early 2022, according to Protos. The broader curve shows Japan paying 1.81 percent for two years, 2.26 percent for five years, and 4.18 percent for 30 years. Debt servicing costs are on track to reach a record 36.6 trillion yen, approximately $230 billion, next fiscal year, up 17 percent year-over-year. The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1 percent in June, the highest in 31 years, and projects core consumer prices rising sharply above its 2 percent target from the second half of fiscal 2026. The yield surge follows July's coordinated yen intervention by the US and Japanese governments, the first such action since 1998, which proved insufficient to hold the currency; the yen has resumed weakness relative to the dollar and trades near 160 per dollar this week.

The macro backdrop matters for crypto because it signals broader risk-off conditions in equities and currencies, historically a headwind for speculative assets. The desk's boards show bitcoin at $77,907.67, down 0.8 percent on the day but up 1.1 percent on the week and 19.5 percent on the month; ether at $2,451.50, down 0.6 percent on the day but up 1.2 percent on the week and 28.9 percent on the month. Both assets are above their 200-day simple moving averages and show RSI readings near 67-68, consistent with overextension in the near term. BTC and ETH ETF flows remained positive through the end of last week: the desk's boards show bitcoin ETF inflows of $216.7 million on August 31 and $803.6 million net over the last five sessions, while ether ETF flows posted $87.6 million on August 31 and $787.7 million net over five sessions. The Whale Watch board shows $178.6 million in bitcoin moving off exchanges over the last 24 hours, with the largest outflow of $96.3 million from Binance and $154.4 million in USDC leaving Coinbase Institutional, a pattern consistent with accumulation or self-custody. Yet the weekly whale flows show a more mixed picture: the week ending August 25 saw $1,094 million move onto exchanges, while this week through September 1 shows $211 million moved onto exchanges, suggesting inflows remain elevated despite the day's direction.

Regulatory developments continued on independent tracks. The SEC's custody rule rewrite entered White House review on August 25 with an October 2026 notice of proposed rulemaking targeted, per The Defiant. The CLARITY Act, which would clarify SEC-CFTC boundaries on digital assets, remains stalled in the Senate despite House passage and committee approval; former SEC Chair Tim Massad and ex-CFTC Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo are urging lighter-touch regulation of the $90 trillion perpetual futures market to bring volume into US jurisdiction, as the desk reported. Separately, Hyperliquid Labs is in advanced talks with Payward, Kraken's parent, to launch perpetual futures in the US via Bitnomial, a CFTC-regulated exchange that Payward acquired in April 2026, though regulatory approval remains pending. Ireland has explicitly barred cryptocurrency from its planned tax-advantaged investment account scheme, limiting eligible assets to stocks, bonds, and ETFs, a policy choice to keep crypto out of a flagship retail savings incentive. In the EU, Revolut rolled out EURR, a euro-backed stablecoin issued by Bridge Building S.A. (a Stripe company) and structured as an e-money token under the MiCA framework, to selected customers in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal on Tuesday.
