Core inflation beat forecast in August; Fed rate hike odds rise to roughly 70% ahead of September 15-16 meeting

Core consumer prices climbed 0.3% month-over-month in August, topping expectations of 0.2%. Markets now price in roughly a 70% chance of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee meeting, per CME's FedWatch tool. Bitcoin fell to approximately $76,000 on the release before recovering above $78,000.

Core consumer prices climbed 0.3% month-over-month in August on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping consensus expectations of 0.2% and setting off a sharp repricing of interest-rate bets in the days before the Federal Open Market Committee meets on September 15-16.

The August inflation data matters because rates drive the cost of borrowing globally and anchor the discount rates investors use to value crypto and other assets with no cash flow. A hotter-than-expected print days before a major policy meeting can lock in near-term rate action, especially if other economic data has also surprised to the upside.

Headline inflation rose 0.4% month-over-month in August, matching the Dow Jones consensus forecast. On a year-over-year basis, headline inflation hit 3.4%, overshooting FactSet's median pre-release projection of 3.3%. Core inflation stood at 2.4% year-over-year, down from July's 2.5% reading and matching FactSet's forecast. Energy prices surged 2.1% for August, with gasoline alone jumping 3.9%, and accounted for more than a third of the total headline increase. Food prices rose just 0.1% month-over-month, while shelter costs continued their moderate upward trajectory.

Friday brought two countervailing currents to the crypto market. August core inflation climbed 0.3% month-over-month, beating consensus expectations of 0.2%, locking in roughly 70% odds of a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike at the September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee meeting, per the desk's reporting. Rates drive the discount rates investors apply to assets with no cash flow, making the inflation print a direct pressure on crypto valuations.

Simultaneously, institutional adoption of blockchain-based financial infrastructure accelerated across three major jurisdictions. U.S. Bank completed a live cross-border payment using USBDC, a dollar-backed stablecoin the bank issued on Stellar, with freezing and clawback controls integrated into the bank's compliance systems. Fnality, the tokenized settlement platform, named Jon Cunliffe, former Bank of England deputy governor, to chair its UK board as the company prepares to launch euro and US dollar systems alongside its existing sterling platform. Nasdaq's venture arm invested $100 million in Payward, Kraken's parent company, at a $21 billion valuation, extending a partnership to distribute tokenized Nasdaq-listed equities on Kraken's platform. Revolut began rolling out EURR, a euro-backed stablecoin, to selected customers in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, with Bridge Building S.A. as the regulated issuer. UniCredit, Italy's second-largest bank, is selecting a technology provider to build infrastructure for cryptocurrency custody, trading, and tokenized investment offerings.

On the regulatory front, the UK House of Lords voted 194-138 on September 11 to approve an amendment requiring the Treasury to develop a mandatory national strategy covering cryptoassets, stablecoins, and tokenized securities. The amendment must still pass the House of Commons before taking effect. In Washington, Senate Republicans released a revised 630-page Clarity Act on September 10, with a procedural cloture vote scheduled for September 15 at 2:15 p.m. The vote requires 60 votes to proceed to floor debate; Republicans hold 53 seats, meaning seven Democratic votes are necessary if all Republicans support the motion.

Enforcement also accelerated. The U.S. Justice Department and Treasury Department seized Xinbi's Telegram channels and restrained $52.8 million in USDT tied to a platform that processed over $24 billion for scam operations across Southeast Asia, with investigators identifying 47 additional wallets in the laundering network.

On security, Osmosis froze 22.65 BTC following a flaw in Nomic's custom forwarding system that allowed a double-spend, creating unbacked nBTC tokens. The flaw leaves 36.03% of allBTC's collateral impaired, with minting and redemption paused pending a governance vote to confiscate the frozen BTC and allocate community-pool funds to restore parity.

The desk's Whale Watch board shows $51.2 million in bitcoin moving off exchanges over the past 24 hours from Coinbase institutional, reversing the week-to-date direction. For the week ending September 11, the board shows $552 million in bitcoin moved onto exchanges overall, compared to $504 million moving off exchanges the week ending September 4. ETF flows present a split: Bitcoin ETFs saw an inflow of $3.8 million on Friday against net outflows of $271.1 million over the last five sessions, while Ethereum ETFs recorded an inflow of $34.2 million on the day and $40.6 million over the same five-session window, showing consistent demand. The desk's boards show ethereum up 5.59% on the day and bitcoin up 1.62%, while the market-wide fear-greed index stands at 56, in "Greed" territory.
